Fred Barbaro, a native of Astoria, died on May 3 at the Hebrew Home of Riverdale after a long illness.  He was 81 years old. Dr. Barbaro taught in the Graduate School of Social Work at Adelphi University for many years. In1979, he pioneered a program for students of the college with learning disabilities, serving as its director until 1990. The program is thriving and has aided thousands of students, many of whom make the Dean’s List every semester.

Fred is survived by his sister, Kathryn Francolini, daughters Elizabeth Barbaro (Mark Schnepf) and Susanne Barbaro (Frank Trezza), grandson Andrew Trezza, 2 nieces and a nephew. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 6, at 11:00 a.m. at Farenga Funeral Home, 38-08 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fred Barbaro Award Fund at Adelphi (516-877-3250). Condolences may be sent to farengafuneralhome.com.
